A renovation and extension to an existing gallery and museum with a particular local community feel filled to the brim with art and artefacts.
This is a community gallery and functions as a community centre where people can drop into the cafe and feel connected to their history surrounding them. A gallery format of collage that encourages people to contribute to the ever evolving display. The layered effect of different patterns of collections emphasise the diverse collection sourced from everyday living to inspiring artworks.
It is the function of museums and galleries to collect, to order, to display and to inspire. A process of organization appears -art and artifacts are linked and compared, timelines are told, history is revealed. Our building is an active participant in this organizing theme. Using a complex layering system with juxtaposed and intertwining building elements. The new facade evokes the image of museum display cabinets -stacked over time -layered like geological rock strata and overlaid with a collage of information, display and signage. Existing buildings are revealed and included as part of these objects on display. The interior also follows this theme.
The plan is organised around one new lift and stair atrium: a clear central orientation space that connects all levels. Previously the art gallery and museum had separate stairs and amenities. It is the intension to unite these buildings into an intertwined whole by relocating and sharing the vertical circulation that allows for a stronger connection to all the spaces over multiple levels and promotes interactivity between the gallery and museum. Space is created by sharing the common stair and new amenities. Light will be embedded into the core of the buildings. A passage through from the busy street frontage to the quiet parkland hidden behind will encourage people through the building who will no doubt get distracted by an exhibition they’re intrigued by. The design allows for maximum integration of the various components of the gallery and museum into a properly organised and functionally unified whole acheived over a number of stages.
