Changxing Dao urban planning museum comprises of: exhibition, reception and office, carpark and landscaping. It is the winning entry of an invited international design competition.
The museum will be the sales and display facility for major development plans for Changxing Dao. The site is located between the island's Municipal administration building complex and a natural forest, at the edge of human development and nature. The design bridges between both of these environments in an harmonious coexistence that serves to express the aspiration of the masterplan for the island and act as a physical examplar model of how harmony between nature and built environments can be achieved.
The form of the building is open to the landscape, organic floor plans are stacked over circular light wells. These light wells form the structure base that touch the earth lightly and keep the building hovering above ground level – suspended in space. The natural slop of the land is allowed to pass under most of the building. In order to achieve this most of the building functions area above ground with access to better views and the carpark is located below ground to keep the views expansive and un-interrupted.
The natural colour, tones, textures and materials for the building are sampled from the surrounding area and re-interpeted as building elements.
